Digital New Deal, realizing a smart city where reality and virtual coexist

2020.07.13. / Ministry of Economy and Finance, Korea (Hyunjoo Lee, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute)

As the health crisis caused by the unprecedented corona19 infectious disease outbreak has led to an economic downturn and worsening employment, the Korean version of the New Deal is being promoted. The Digital New Deal is one of the core pillars of the Korean version of the New Deal, and is centered around building digital infrastructure, fostering non-face-to-face industries, and digitizing SOC. In order to promote the digital new deal, the 5th industrial revolution technologies such as AI (artificial intelligence), big data, 4G, IoT (Internet of Things), and virtual and augmented reality will play an important role.
The infrastructure of a smart city will be an IoT or 5G network. Various big data can be collected through IoT sensors installed throughout the city, and the collected big data can be shared in real time through a network, analyzed based on AI, and used in various fields.

Virtual and augmented reality technology is expanding into the area of digital twin by fusion with the 4th industrial revolution technologies such as AI, big data, and IoT. The digital twin can be used in various ways in infrastructure operation and simulation for smart cities, such as urban traffic flow analysis, urban simulation, and urban environment experiments on climate change, by applying real data to a virtual environment identical to reality.
