– Promote the transition to a citizen-participating smart city with the 4th Industrial Revolution –
– Promoting smartization through various fields across Poland –

Smart city is based on advanced information and communication technology (ICT) to collect, analyze, and apply various types of electronic data in cities to solve problems occurring in the city such as traffic, environment, public facilities, and to create a city that optimizes life. Say. Together with computers, modern technology, and the Internet of Things, it enables residents to actively participate to create a more eco-friendly, smarter, and more livable area. With the 4th Industrial Revolution accelerating around the world, interest in applying new and creative solutions and improving the environment through them is growing. Following this global trend, Poland is also showing continuous interest and investment in smart cities, and the government is also interested in actively promoting smart cities through citizen-participating projects.

Various efforts of the Polish government

The Polish Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy held the'Human Smart City' contest and carried out the project under the theme of'Intelligent City jointly created by local residents'. Of the 2017 cities that entered the final market in 69, 25 cities were selected, divided into 2 large cities, 15 medium cities, and 8 small towns, with subsidies ranging from 50 to 4 million. These cities are given time to implement the project by the end of 2022.

In addition, the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy formed the'Visegrad (V2019) Group' with the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia in 4 and signed a cooperation agreement to introduce the concept of smart city. Aiming to build an integrated platform for smart city solutions at the urban and regional level, we are making efforts to realize a smart city by exchanging practical experiences and ideas, forming an international team and mandating regular cooperation.

In addition, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has conducted a new project related to smart cities, the joint Polish Smart City offer project, for the purpose of promoting Polish companies. Participation in the project was supported by companies that can improve traffic communication, increase energy efficiency, promote management, and provide solutions related to smart cities.

Poland's Challenge for Smart Cities

Poland is continuing its transition to smart cities in various regions, and according to the '2020 Most Intelligent Cities in the World' published in the IESE Cities in Motion Index 100 report, Warsaw ranked 54th in the world and Wrocław 88th in the world. It was included in the top list.

Smart city-related project fields by city are as described above, and among them, Wrocław is showing the most active interest and investment with a total of 58 projects.

Wrocław is pursuing a smart city that aims to improve the quality of life, good infrastructure, friendly environment and transportation, a thriving economy and education through cooperation between citizens, local governments and companies. There are a total of 8 sub-fields, and the fields are public management, economy, living environment, people, education, transportation, infrastructure, and environment.

As an example of a recent project, Wrocław equips 10 city buses with artificial intelligence cameras to collect road infrastructure information, including traffic lights, road signs, or holes in the road after running a fixed route for three months. The collected data enables road infrastructure mapping and dynamic mapping of pedestrian and bicycle mobility, and through this, a project is undertaken to more effectively manage urban infrastructure and improve road safety. In addition, various projects such as smart trash cans, car parking space detection, remote medical care and social remote treatment for the elderly are underway, and detailed information can be found on the official Wroclaw website (www.wroclaw.pl). In the past, it is trying to expand to various fields beyond the smart city, which was mainly focused on transportation, and at the same time, it rose to the 3th place in the ranking as an'intelligent city' compared to the previous year.

Smart cities are being promoted faster through cooperation between companies and local governments. In particular, logistics systems are leading the way in building smart systems, and InPost, a Polish parcel and parcel storage operator, signed a contract to reduce CO2 emissions in the city center and significantly reduce the use of internal combustion vehicles by cooperating with Lodz's green project. I did it. InPost, in order to further reduce the amount of pollutants caused by the development of e-commerce, built an electric charger network at the point where mobile access and parcel storage are located, and the replacement of the courier vehicle with an electric vehicle lowers CO2 emissions by 75%, and the lives of the residents of Lodz It is expected to contribute to improving the quality. In addition, T-Mobile, one of Poland's leading telecommunications companies, announced the implementation of a number of modern smart city solutions to improve the quality of life and safety of residents under a contract with the city of Chocianow in the province of Dolnoslaskie. This includes installing a city Wi-Fi video monitoring system.

In addition, the city of Rzeszów, located in southern Poland, implemented a pilot project in 2017 with the introduction of an intelligent transportation system. Through this, development in the transportation sector has been achieved, such as increasing availability, punctuality, safety and convenience of public transportation use.

Meanwhile, Poland is pushing ahead with a project to build a new airport that will become a new transport hub in Europe at the midpoint between Warsaw and Lodz. In addition, it plans to build a new airport city (Aerotropolis) with a population of about 5 next to the airport, and it has been announced that this new city will be designed and built as a smart city from the beginning.

Growing interest with annual smart city-related events and awards ceremonies held in Poland

The Smart City Forum, the largest conference dealing with the functions and development of smart cities in Poland, has been held annually, and this year marks its 12th. In this forum, local government representatives, company representative directors, and other smart city-related stakeholders exchange practical experiences, and overseas experts with innovative smart city solutions from around the world, such as Barcelona, Singapore, and Toronto, are invited to conduct discussions. In addition, there is an awards ceremony that gives trophies to best practices, regions, officials, and companies, and interest in smart cities is increasing.

In addition,'Smart City Expo' is held in other cities every year in Poland, and'URBIS SMART CITY FAIR' is also held in the Czech Republic, a neighboring country. This exhibition showcases technologies, products and services related to smart cities in Poland and neighboring countries, and is held in a B2B format in which manufacturers, distributors, government officials, and investors participate. The exhibition topics include IoT, renewable energy sources, smart metering, smart monitoring, energy storage methods, e-mobility, electric vehicles and charging systems, anti-smog technologies and solutions, and low-emission urban transport.

As one of the events of the'Smart City Expo Poland' fair, the'Smart City Poland Award' contest is held, and cases are shared with companies implementing innovative ideas in Polish cities. In 2020,'Asseco Data Systems' in the field of transportation,'T-Mobile Polska' in the field of environmental protection and innovation economy, and'S4C' in the field of E-service were respectively awarded. For example,'Asseco Data Systme' was awarded the case of implementing the largest EMV payment system in Poland by applying a distance fee based on a general-purpose automatic computer using MS Windows IoT in the city of Tychy, Poland.

Expert interview

According to Mr. M, an expert in the field of smart city solutions, smart cities should focus on making people's lives convenient and enriching, and improving work efficiency. He said that it proves that it is a city of In particular, he added that smart cities will grow significantly through the development of algorithms that can predict problem phenomena based on big data and artificial intelligence with great potential and ease of use and solution proposals, and Poland is no exception.

implication

In modern society, with the development of the high-tech industry, the transition to an eco-friendly, smart, and livable smart city is required, and in line with this, the government, local governments, companies, and citizens are participating in the development of smart cities in Poland as well. . It is being applied not only in the transportation field, which has been universally applied in the past, but also in various fields. As a result of this, Warsaw and Wrocław are showing progress in Poland, ranking as intelligent cities in the world.

Based on Korea's cutting-edge technology, it is expected that it will be a good opportunity to develop technological cooperation and cooperative development that meets the needs of the Polish market and advance into related equipment. In particular, if you actively participate in or visit an exhibition or forum and try to contact related companies, it will be a good way to find out your first entry opportunity.
