– Announcement of technical results for 80 years on the actual road of Yeongdong Line and Jungbu Naeryuk Line (4km) –

□ The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport held the final performance presentation of the development of autonomous cooperative driving-based truck platooning technology development for the past four years on the 9th, and at the same time, on-site demonstration of four trucks in an 4km section including Yeongdong Line and Jungbu Inland Line They said they plan to work together.

ㅇ Truck platooning is a technology that utilizes autonomous cooperative driving* technology to automatically follow the preceding vehicle at a certain interval and operate as a single vehicle.
* (Autonomous cooperative driving) A technology that supports autonomous driving by exchanging vehicle and road environment information using wireless communication between vehicles and between vehicles and infrastructure

ㅇ The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport carried out the technology development* from '18 to this year, and today's event will show the final results.
* (Period/Budget) '18.4-'21.12 / 98.5 billion won, (participating institutions) 13 institutions including Korea Expressway Corporation, Kookmin University, Hyundai Motor Company, Kakao Mobility, and Ajou University

□ The final performance presentation will be held online* from 14:XNUMX, and at the same time, a public road technology demonstration will be held. The main contents are as follows.
* (Online participation method) Watch live broadcast on YouTube “Swarming Research Center” channel

ㅇ (Performance Presentation) The performance presentation consisted of watching a promotional video to help people understand the technology demonstration and lectures by experts.
– Along with an overall explanation of the platooning technology, the researchers will present their research results, such as V2X-based platooning vehicle control technology, mobile app-based platooning service technology, and legal and institutional improvement directions for commercialization of platooning. am.

ㅇ (Technical Demonstration) The technology demonstration will be held in an approximately 80km section (Yeongdong Line Deokpyeong IC ~ Wonju IC, Jungbu Naeryuk Line Seoyeoju Rest Area ~ Yeoju JC), and we plan to introduce improved vehicle technology and mobile app-based platoon operation service.
– In this year's demonstration, one more vehicle was added (3 → 4) compared to last year, and the demonstration section was expanded (8km → 80km) to realize the actual situation. In addition, it will show more advanced technological achievements by increasing the driving speed* (80km/h→90km/h) and reducing the distance between vehicles (15.6m→12.5m).
* In the actual field demonstration, the demonstration will be performed according to the speed limit (Yeongdong Line, 80 km/h) in the relevant section.
– In particular, we plan to demonstrate the entire process of each vehicle joining, maintaining, and leaving the platoon through the app-based operation service, suggesting the possibility of commercialization of platoon driving technology.
* The on-site demonstration event will be conducted in compliance with the COVID-19 quarantine rules such as wearing a mask, maintaining a distance between attendees, minimizing attendees, and not eating.

□ If such truck platooning is commercialized in the future, it is expected to greatly contribute to not only traffic safety but also logistics efficiency.

ㅇ It is expected that driver fatigue will be reduced due to driving automation, and accidents caused by drowsy driving will be drastically reduced.

ㅇ In addition, when several trucks are operated with a narrow distance, air resistance is reduced and fuel efficiency is improved by about 4-8%, which reduces logistics costs, and at the same time, it can be expected to reduce CO2 emission and fine dust.

□ Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Kim Jeong-hee, Minister of Automobile Policy, said, “The platooning technology is a core technology that can be used not only for logistics transportation but also for passenger transportation. I will go out,” he said.

ㅇ “According to the '6st Self-driving Transportation Logistics Basic Plan' established in June, we will actively support private technology development so that services such as self-driving shuttles, taxis, and delivery can be commercialized as soon as possible, while simultaneously promoting plans such as legal and institutional maintenance and infrastructure establishment,” he said.
