- The Mozambique Ministry of Transport and Communications conducted a feasibility study of the BRT (Berline Express Bus System) project applicable to Maputo using World Bank funds.
– Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, suffers from traffic jams on the main road for 12.7 passengers a day
– The main means of transportation for passengers is minibuses, and the need for securing bus-only roads and alleviating traffic congestion is emerging.
- BRT system construction and road expansion
– The Mozambican government judges that one of the main components for the BRT project is road expansion.
– BRT inspection in Brazil and South Africa has been completed, and in 2019, the person in charge of the ordering company also inspected the BRT system in Korea through the Trade Center program.
– It is judged that a minimum of 26m round-trip road lanes must be secured for the BRT in Maputo to proceed.
- Government expects 11 BRT major terminals in Maputo to be needed
– We are planning to build a network that connects 11 major terminals back to detailed terminals.
– In addition to minibuses, other means of transportation such as tuk-tuks (small three-wheeled taxis) are also being considered.
* The estimated amount of the project is about 1455 billion USD, and this amount does not include relocation and reserve expenses.
