◈ Efforts to transition to a digital-centric economy since Mayor Park Hyung-joon took office… Expected to take off in earnest as a global smart city that leads the 8th industrial revolution beyond Asia

Busan City succeeded in transitioning to a digital-centric economy, and started a full-fledged leap as a global smart city in name and reality.

Citing the 5th evaluation of the Global Smart Centers Index (SCI)* announced at the end of May, the city of Busan announced that it ranked 5th out of 76 major cities around the world as a digital-centered smart city.

* Digital-centric smart city competitiveness ranking of major cities in the world, announced twice annually by Z/Yen (located in London, UK), a global consulting firm, in the first and second half of every year from 2020 Ranking is determined through survey evaluation by experts in each field

Busan City, which first ranked 6nd in the 3rd SCI announced in June last year, has risen 62 places to 4st in the 21th round in the second half of last year, and this time it continues its upward trend to 41th.

In particular, since the first half of last year, it has climbed a total of 1 steps vertically in just one year, becoming the city that has raised the rank the most among 35 cities evaluated during the same period.

* Busan ranking change: 62nd (in '21, first entry) → 41st (in '21, 21st ↑) → 27th (in '22, 14th ↑)

Busan City ranks 6th in high-tech fields such as block chain, artificial intelligence, and fintech, which are the core of the 4th industrial revolution and digital economy among the six quantitative evaluation items. We expect further improvement in the overall ranking in the future.

Looking at the global smart center index as a whole, New York and London, the world financial centers, took first and second places, respectively, followed by Hong Kong in third and Zurich in fourth. As for Asian cities, Singapore 1th, Shanghai 2th, Beijing 3nd and Tokyo 4th made the top spots. In Korea, Seoul is the highest at 12th, followed by Busan.

※ Ranking of major cities: New York (1st), London (2nd), Hong Kong (3rd), Zurich (4th), Copenhagen (5th), Singapore (12th), Shanghai (20th), Beijing (22nd) Above), Seoul (24th), Busan (27th), Tokyo (28th), Berlin (30th), Paris (38th), etc.

Although Busan entered the evaluation list relatively late, it is analyzed that the reason why the ranking is rising with a steep upward trend is because of the accelerated digital transformation of Busan's economic structure, which has been in full swing since the inauguration of Mayor Park Hyung-joon last year.

During the first reorganization last summer, the 'Digital Economy Innovation Office' was preemptively established to promote the integration of 'smart' and 'digital' throughout Busan's industry, and a number of cutting-edge technologies such as 'Cluckus', a representative cloud company in the metropolitan area, were promoted. It seems that various digital-related businesses and future expectations are directly or indirectly reflected, such as attracting companies and nurturing key digital talent through local-industry cooperation.

In addition, at the beginning of this year, the 'Busan Special Committee on Digital Innovation', a comprehensive control tower, was launched, and the systematic promotion to achieve the 'Busan Digital Economy Innovation Strategy 2030' goal* announced at this time and the business results and achievements were added, giving a good score this time. is evaluated as having received

* Digital economy innovation strategy 2030 Goal: By 2030 ①Enter the world’s 20th smart city ②Nurture 2 creative talents ③Achieve KRW 20 trillion in annual sales in new digital industries

Major achievements of digital economy innovation include ▲Progress of Buzz (Buds*) fostering project using the nation's only 'Blockchain Regulation Free Zone' ▲Establishment of 'Blockchain Technology Innovation Support Center' for the first time in a local government together with the Ministry of Science and ICT last May ▲Opening of 'Busan Digital Innovation Academy' and fostering around 5 key digital talents a year.

* BUDS: B (blockchain), U (unicorn), D (decacon), S (star) space creation

In addition, major smart projects such as ▲Establishment of an ICT triangle in the southeast region ▲Establishment of a digital asset exchange ▲Blockchain specialized cluster are also planned to be promoted in earnest.

The city plans to continue its current upward trend by steadily promoting the four core tasks of the digital economy 2030: ▲ upgrading innovative resources ▲ digital innovation of key industries ▲ fostering new digital industries ▲ spreading innovation bases.

Busan Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, “The transition to a digital economy, which has been steadily promoted since taking office last year, is cruising, and now the results are showing little by little. We will achieve our goal of entering the market early.”

“We will quickly spread the wave of digital innovation that has already blown to all industries in Busan to create Busan, a global smart hub city that leads the 4th industrial revolution beyond Asia.”
