– Introduction of smart farm trends and promising areas for cooperation between Korea and Chile, providing opportunities for Korea-Chile cooperation

In the era of Agriculture 4.0, agricultural digitization is being promoted by integrating innovative ICT technologies such as IoT, artificial intelligence, big data, and robots into agriculture. Under this background, the KOTRA Santiago Trade Center held a two-day Korea-Chile smart farm cooperation webinar from June 2022 to 6, 14 to provide an opportunity to look at smart farm trends and promising areas for cooperation.

Webinar Overview

KOTRA Santiago Trade Center held a webinar on Korea-Chile smart farm cooperation over two days on June 2022 and 6, 14. This webinar was conducted to look at smart farm trends and promising areas for cooperation in Korea and Chile in the era of Agriculture 15, which converges innovative ICT technologies such as IoT, artificial intelligence, big data, and robots into agriculture. The main contents are as follows. .

Webinar Highlights

The webinar, which started with a welcome speech by the head of KOTRA's Santiago trade, was held on the 14th, the first day, to introduce Korea's smart farm to a Chilean audience. The first speaker, Lee Jae-su, an agricultural researcher at the Rural Development Administration, emphasized that smart agricultural technology in Korea is mainly being developed in the fields of horticulture, livestock raising, and field crops, and that the use of smart greenhouses can improve convenience in agriculture and increase crop productivity. Next, agricultural researcher Kim Hee-tae of the Rural Development Administration explained that the smart irrigation system was developed based on soil moisture or ecological information, and intelligent irrigation technology using drones, AI, and big data is currently being developed. Dr. Young-sun Kang of Chungnam National University mentioned that digital agriculture is a combination of precision agriculture and smart agriculture.

Subsequently, various smart farm-related technologies and solutions were presented by four of our smart farm companies (Formeat, Palm Connect, Manna CE, U-Like Korea). Smart farm-related systems were introduced in various fields such as AI, big data, hydroponics, and smart livestock, and received a lot of attention from the Chilean government and major institutions, Ming Buyers.

Next, on the second day, the 15th, a presentation on the Chilean Smart Farm for the Korean audience was held. Stanley Best, Director of Digital Agriculture at the Chilean Institute of Agriculture and Fisheries (INIA), explained the current status of Chile's Agriculture 4.0 and Agricultural Robotics. In particular, he noted that there are currently 300 weather stations that monitor crops and climate and analyze this information to harvest fruit. He also presented drone technology that fires pesticides and monitors crop growth throughout the season.

José Antonio Reyes, head of ThinkAgro in Chile, is mainly engaged in digital agriculture-related activities in four fields: software, Internet of Things, data analysis, and outsourcing. You mentioned that you are working on an early warning system that informs you. Finally, Jorge Valenzuela, president of the Chilean Fruit Association (Fedefruta), presented the current status of Chilean fruit cultivation and the challenges facing the fruit industry, including production, logistics, and automation.

implication

In Chile, agriculture is the main industry, accounting for about 19% of total exports. However, due to recent climate change, rainfall is decreasing and desertification is rapidly progressing, so how to solve the water shortage problem is emerging as a big topic in the agricultural industry. On the other hand, Chile is continuously promoting the intelligentization and unmanned agriculture in order to improve agricultural productivity and create added value.

Under this background, while conducting the Korea-Chile smart farm cooperation webinar, I was able to get a glimpse of Chilean buyers' interest in Korean smart farm solutions. In particular, it was possible to confirm the willingness of Chilean government agencies to actively cooperate with Korean smart farm companies related to vertical agriculture and smart irrigation systems.

KOTRA Santiago Trade Center will hold a video conference in conjunction with the webinar, and will continue to support Korea-Chile smart farm cooperation by arranging video conferences throughout the year even after the video conference is over. As an opportunity to consult with buyers without additional cost and time investment, companies of interest are recommended to participate in the conference.
