Improving non-signalized crosswalk facilities to prevent pedestrian safety accidents at night

Changwon Special City (Mayor Hong Nam-pyo) announced on the 13th that it is implementing the 'crosswalk safety light installation project' from this month to create a traffic environment where citizens can safely walk at night.

For the crosswalk safety light project, two pilot installations were installed last year with subsidy support from the Gyeongsangnam-do Autonomous Police Committee. It aims to 'protect pedestrians at non-signalized crosswalks at night'.

According to the National Police Agency traffic accident analysis system 'TASS' statistics, the number of deaths in traffic accidents in Changwon City in 2021 was 52 out of a total of 14 deaths, accounting for about 26.9% of the total number of deaths. In particular, the number of fatalities during crossing was found to be very frequent with 18 out of 6 deaths due to accidents that occurred at night (14:10 ~ XNUMX:XNUMX the next day).

Accordingly, the city plans to secure 1 million won for municipal expenses, select a total of 26 points through demand surveys for non-signal crosswalk accidents in Changwon and district offices, and complete the construction in the first half of the year.

Jeong Sun-gil, head of the Transportation Policy Division, said, “Through the crosswalk safety light installation project, we expect to improve the pedestrian environment at non-signal crosswalks at night, increase awareness of crosswalks regardless of whether there are pedestrians, and reduce pedestrian accidents at crosswalks.” We will continue to make efforts to create a safe traffic environment in the central city of Changwon.”
