Jeollanam-do announced that it had preemptively launched a feasibility study to introduce an eco-friendly transportation method 'Jeonnam-type streetcar (tram)' connecting Hadang, Muan Namak, and Oryong New Town from the old city center of Mokpo.

This is the core project of the new social overhead capital (SOC) project in the southwestern Jeonnam region. After announcing the plan in May, an additional budget of 5 million won was secured for a pre-feasibility study in June, and the service began in earnest in July to review detailed plans.

The streetcar (tram) introduction service is selected by the Seoul National University of Science and Technology Industry-University Cooperation Foundation, a service agency specializing in the railway sector, and after analyzing the optimal route and appropriate vehicle system introduction and economic feasibility (B/C) for one year, a detailed plan is established. .

Jeonnam-do plans to establish an urban rail network construction plan when the detailed plan for streetcars (trams) is completed, and to proceed promptly with the goal of finalizing the final business plan after obtaining approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport and a preliminary feasibility study from the Ministry of Economy and Finance. am.

The Jeonnam-type streetcar (tram) is a project that requires a total project cost of 16 billion won to connect 4 km from the modernized street in the old city center of Mokpo to Hadang and Muan Namak and Oryong New Town. It is a large-scale project that is expected to revitalize the southwest region by improving accessibility between the old and new downtown areas.

Streetcars (trams) are eco-friendly high-tech means of transportation that emit relatively little pollutants such as noise and smoke because they are powered by electricity or hydrogen. As a lightweight train equipped with both convenience and tourism functions, it is in the spotlight worldwide as an alternative means of transportation to heavy subways that require an astronomical budget.

Local governments across the country, including Busan, Daejeon, Incheon, Ulsan, and Changwon, are reviewing the introduction of streetcars (trams). Jeonnam-do plans to introduce a streetcar (tram) suitable for the local situation by investigating cases at home and abroad and receiving advice and organic cooperation from specialized organizations such as the Korea Railroad Research Institute during the service process.

Yoo Ho-gyu, director of the Construction and Transportation Bureau of Jeollanam-do, said, "If the Jeonnam-type streetcar (tram) is built, it will greatly contribute to revitalizing the tourism industry and local economy in the southwestern Jeonnam area as a new means of public transportation connecting local attractions and major bases." We will establish a detailed plan as quickly as possible so that the 'Jeonnam-type streetcar (tram)' can settle down as early as possible.”
