UAM, a world-class tourist resort city through the construction of a cruise terminal, and a carbon-free energy leading city through waste battery recycling and a distributed energy special zone

Jeju Haenyeo Fishery and Tamra Historical and Cultural Zone are cultural heritage preservation, transmission, medical, education, and living infrastructure, making it a happy island for the residents.

President Yoon Seok-yeol held a press conference at the Jeju International Free City Development Center (JDC) on Tuesday, October 10.15. "People's livelihood discussion with the people : Twenty-ninth, A clean island open to the world, Global resort city Jeju'The discussion on this day was held under the following themes: ➊Jeju, a world-class tourist resort city; ➋Jeju, a leading city in carbon-free energy; and ➌Jeju, a livable city supported by medical care and education.

In his speech, the president called Jeju Island, which possesses beautiful nature and ecological assets recognized by the international community and is leading the transition to carbon-free energy, a national treasure, and emphasized that if Jeju focuses on its unique characteristics and implements a solid development strategy in the future, it will be able to make much greater leaps forward.

The president presented three visions for the development of Jeju Island: 'connection and specialization, cleanliness and innovation, and real change.' First, in terms of tourism, he said that he would further develop Jeju Island's tourism and medical infrastructure through 'connection and specialization,' while in terms of industry, he would support Jeju Island's clean energy and innovation in clean industries. He also promised to substantially improve Jeju Island's living conditions.

First, in order to establish Jeju Special Self-Governing Province as a world-class cultural tourism resort city, we decided to promote the development of Jeju New Port, designate an urban air traffic (UAM) pilot operation area, preserve the haenyeo fishery, and establish the Tamna Cultural Heritage Research Center.

In order to attract international cruise tourists, which has been rapidly increasing recently, and to foster Jeju Port as a world-class tourist port, we plan to promote the development of Jeju New Port. Jeju Island has the optimal conditions for urban air mobility (UAM) tourism business, and we are working with private companies to commercialize it, so we plan to check the progress and actively support the government.

Based on Jeju Island's position as the number one island region in terms of electric vehicle penetration rate and renewable energy generation, various measures were explored to become a leading city in carbon-free energy.

First, we plan to actively support recycling technology development and infrastructure construction to foster Jeju Island, which has the highest electric vehicle penetration rate in the country, as a leading region for electric vehicle battery recycling. In order to achieve carbon neutrality in Jeju’s transportation sector, we will build a hydrogen car ecosystem based on green hydrogen, a carbon-free energy source. We will also promote the establishment of a Jeju Island distributed special zone plan so that more innovative energy new industries can be activated in Jeju. In addition, we will continue to support the industry related to lava seawater, Jeju’s only specialized water resource, so that it can be fostered as a high value-added, regional specialized industry in Jeju.

The government is actively promoting the idea that Jeju Special Self-Governing Province residents can enjoy a living environment that is no different from that of inland areas in all aspects, including medical care, environment, logistics, and education.

In order to establish a regional complete medical system in Jeju, we are reviewing a plan to reset the treatment area by considering the characteristics of Jeju Island as an island and many tourists, etc., when designating the next general hospital ('27~'29). We plan to expand the public sewage infrastructure to improve the water quality of public waters and realize a clean Jeju through stable sewage treatment. Considering the logistics conditions of the Jeju region where logistics costs are high compared to the mainland, we are also promoting the construction of a Jeju Smart Joint Logistics Center that small and medium-sized enterprises can use at low rent. We decided to improve the living environment of Chuja Island residents by including Chuja Island in the 'distant islands' according to the 'Special Act on Support for Remote Islands in the Outer Territory' scheduled to be implemented in January next year.

Today’s discussion was attended by around 80 Jeju businesspeople, parents, and local residents, including Woo Dong-gi, Chairman of the Jeju Provincial Government; Cho Gyu-hong, Minister of Health & Welfare; Lee Jeong-hyeon, Vice Chairman of the Jeju Provincial Government; and Oh Young-hoon, Governor of Jeju Island. They discussed in depth ways to foster Jeju Island as a clean, carbon-free energy city and a global tourism destination sought after by people from all over the world.
