From jaywalking warnings to green light extensions, smart crosswalks are in full operation

Daegu Metropolitan City is launching a smart crosswalk service using artificial intelligence technology to enhance pedestrian safety.

Smart crosswalk is a service that installs AI-based cameras at both ends of crosswalks within children's protection zones, automatically detects pedestrians, and provides audible warning messages to prevent traffic accidents.

If a pedestrian trying to cross the crosswalk jaywalks out of the safe zone, a voice message will be sent warning them of the danger, saying, “It is dangerous. Please move to the sidewalk.” If the remaining time on the green signal is insufficient compared to the distance the pedestrian needs to cross, a voice guidance will be given saying, “Cross at the next signal.”

In cases where a pedestrian is crossing a crosswalk and does not have enough time to reach the other side, the green light time is extended slightly to help the pedestrian cross the crosswalk safely.

All of these services are possible thanks to cameras equipped with artificial intelligence technology that automatically recognizes pedestrians and learns their behavior patterns.

It automatically captures the location and behavior of pedestrians on both sides of a crosswalk and warns them of dangerous behavior, such as leaving a preset safety zone, and was installed in a children's protection zone around a school after consultation with the Daegu National Police Agency.

Daegu City invested 2023 million won in 7.3 to conduct a pilot operation in six locations in the western district, and plans to expand the service area to 6 locations across Daegu with a budget of 2024 million won in 9, and begin the official smart crosswalk service on Monday, January 20.

With the official launch of the smart crosswalk service, we plan to conduct a service satisfaction survey targeting 200 citizens online and offline after a certain period of operation to prove the device’s effectiveness in preventing traffic accidents and to secure momentum for additional projects. Based on this, we plan to identify areas for service improvement and increase user satisfaction and traffic accident prevention effectiveness.

Heo Jun-seok, the director of Daegu Metropolitan City Transportation Bureau, said, “As artificial intelligence technology is actively being applied to all aspects of civic administration, there are high expectations for the traffic accident prevention effect of the smart crosswalk service, which is now officially starting its service,” and “We will make every effort to expand the service area and develop additional content by referring to the results of the satisfaction survey.”
