– 2024 billion won investment by 283, smart service close to citizen life
– Prepare a model to solve problems in old downtown areas such as Chungjang-dong, Dongmyeong-dong, and Seonam-dong

Gwangju Metropolitan City recently signed an agreement with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport to promote the '2022 regional base smart city development project'.

The regional base smart city creation project is a project that promotes fundamental changes in the city by creating an integrated smart city model, such as building smart infrastructure and services to solve urban problems such as energy, traffic, safety, and environment, centering on regional bases.

From 2022 to 2024, the project will be centered on Chungjang-dong, Dongmyeong-dong, and Seonam-dong, Dong-gu, and total 120 billion won, including 120 billion won from the government, 43 billion won from municipal funds, and 283 billion won from private funds.

In December of last year, Gwangju City was selected for the ‘2022 Regional Base Smart City Creation Project’ by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport in collaboration with the Hanwha Systems Consortium, Gwangju Metropolitan City Corporation, and Dong-gu Office. After consulting with Infrastructure, and Transport, the agreement was concluded by supplementing the business plan with a focus on building services and infrastructure close to citizens' lives.

In particular, Gwangju City is the first to sign an agreement among the four regions selected this time: Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do, and Changwon-si, Gyeongnam.

The Gwangju regional base smart city project builds services and infrastructure in four areas, including energy, transportation, safety, and environment, reflecting the typical urban problems of the old city center. It is characterized by the goal of 'energy-independent smart city for RE4 carbon neutrality'.

The RE100 Mega Station, an electric vehicle (EV) charging station that directly produces, shares, and consumes solar energy to create a foundation for energy independence, will be built on a public site to solve the problem of insufficient EV charging infrastructure and provide eco-friendly charging services.

In addition, ▲a smart parking lot is introduced into public parking lots to solve traffic problems such as serious parking inconvenience and illegal parking in the Dong-gu area ▲In order to prevent accidents and safety of citizens, artificial intelligence CCTVs and smart poles are expanded in crime areas. Smart crosswalks are installed in the protection zone for the elderly to protect citizens from danger.

In addition, in order to solve the ▲waste recycling problem that has become serious after Corona 19, it is planning to create a pleasant urban environment by building a recycling collection vending machine that classifies PET, CAN, and paper with artificial intelligence.

In addition, it is planning to establish a data hub in connection with the CCTV control center to collect and analyze data of various cities necessary for policy establishment of administrative agencies to lay the foundation for smart city operation.

In the future, based on these business plans, the detailed design and execution plan will be established by September, and the project will be promoted with the goal of starting construction in October after receiving approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport.

Kim Jeong-hoon, head of the city planning and coordination office, said, “Through this project, we plan to solve various urban problems in the old city center and promote the creation of a smart city that citizens can experience. We will do our best to spread it.”
