– Announcement of ‘Future Transport Facility Policy’ using artificial intelligence and big data
– Establishment of smart crosswalk safety facility management system
– Gradual expansion of installation of diagonal crosswalks and roundabouts

Gwangju City is reborn as a future smart transportation city by building an intelligent transportation system (ITS) smart crosswalk and promoting a traffic safety facility management system.

Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kang Ki-jeong) recently held a workshop with Gwangju National Police Agency traffic safety facility managers to discuss in-depth traffic facility promotion policies and expansion areas, reduce citizen inconvenience and increase traffic safety, '2023 Future Traffic Facility Focus Promotion Policy' ', announced on the 1st.

First, the city of Gwangju promotes a project to build an intelligent transportation system (ITS) smart crosswalk using artificial intelligence (AI) sensors and big data.

Smart crosswalks automatically detect pedestrians and vehicles with state-of-the-art sensor technology, and display voice warnings to pedestrians not to jaywalk and stop line violation information to drivers. It is a futuristic system equipped with a function that automatically extends the walking signal when a pedestrian fails to cross the crosswalk.

This project was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport contest project last year and secured 5 million won in government funding, and a total project cost of 4600 billion won was added to this, and priority was given to areas where traffic accidents are common, such as near Geumho District in Seo-gu. According to the plan, the project will begin in August this year after going through basic design services for 13 locations and complete the installation by March next year.

Gwangju City plans to continuously expand the installation site if the smart crosswalk construction project has a good traffic accident prevention effect and citizen response.

In addition, Gwangju City establishes a traffic safety facility management system (T-GIS) that converts big data based on the national geographic information system (GIS) to systematically maintain and manage rapidly increasing traffic safety facilities.

In the meantime, the number of installation and management of traffic safety facilities has been continuously increasing, but the need for systematic management measures such as location information, maintenance history, and statistics management has been raised. When the system construction is completed, it is expected that efficient budget execution will be possible through the prediction of the number of new installations and replacements required.

In particular, by promoting the project in connection with the spatial convergence big data platform construction project being promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT for the first time in the nation, it will have the effect of saving about 12 billion won compared to Seoul or Daejeon City, which have already built and operated with their own budget. predicted to be

Along with this, Gwangju City will expand diagonal crosswalks and roundabouts.

The diagonal crosswalk is a facility that can secure both pedestrian safety and convenience by fundamentally blocking the entry of vehicles by reducing the number of pedestrians crossing the intersection by once and turning on green signals for walking in all directions. First of all, it will be installed in the Sangmu district and two child protection areas with many pedestrians, and will be gradually expanded after analyzing the effect.

Gwangju City promotes a project to convert intersections with no traffic lights or needless signal control to roundabouts among general intersections with unnecessarily long wait times. This year, more than four micro roundabouts are planned to be installed, and more than 4 roundabouts will be installed over the next five years, gradually expanding.

In addition, a project to improve 14 places with frequent traffic accidents will be promoted.

This year, along with 12 intersections in front of Deungchon in Yongbong-dong, Buk-gu, which have been selected as targets for improvement, the Daein-dong intersection in Daein-dong and Mokryeon intersection in Unnam-dong ~ the intersection in front of Eodeungsan Pharmacy in Singa-dong have not been improved even after being selected as areas with frequent traffic accidents due to lack of project funds and priorities. 2 additional areas are being implemented for improvement.

The areas to be improved are selected by the National Police Agency and the Road Traffic Authority based on the statistical data of the National Police Agency for the frequent traffic accidents where five or more traffic accidents occur annually in the same location based on the number of casualties.

Through research and analysis, customized traffic safety facilities such as lane adjustment, geometric structure improvement, traffic signal and traffic safety facility installation, etc. have been established, and the number of accidents before and after the improvement construction in 2021 has been reduced by 35% and the number of human casualties reduced by 45%. Reaped.

Lim Chan-hyeok, head of the Transportation Policy Division, said, “Transportation facility policies need to change in line with changes in the social environment, such as the age of artificial intelligence (AI) and the entry of a super-aged society.” We will promote a 'safe and convenient future transportation policy' that will reduce traffic and increase traffic safety,” he said.
